cool ipad apps

OK.  SO...I didn't exactly feel like telling the world I got an ipad but Tracy and I are celebrating our 28th anniversary and were feeling a little mischievous the other day.  We went to the apple store for something else and ended up playing around with the ipads...which, btw, we both convinced ourselves that we didn't need or want.  I started goofing around with the photo apps and it was all over for me.  I wanted one.  Meanwhile, Tracy was looking at some comic book apps among other things and getting that same twinkle in his eye that I had.  We decided we would buy each other one for our anniversary (and just stay home and eat soup this year).  We have been having fun with them ever since.  SO...if you happen to have one, I thought I'd review a few cool apps.  The top photo is my journal page...unaltered (for reference).  #2 is photogene (highly recommended).  #3 is Touch FX (highly recommended).  #4 is  Typedrawing (something I absolutely will use).  #5 is TiltshiftGen (would look better on photos). #6 is Filterstorm (not so crazy about...not as intuitive).
Here are 2 more apps worth mentioning.  pictures #1,2 are from Harmonious (an app that had me captivated for nearly an hour).  Click on them to make them bigger so you can see.  btw, the app Qvik sketch is very similiar but not as good.  pics #3, 4 are made with Silhouettes (I am SO going to be turning some of my images into stamp carvings with this app!).  I see the value with b/w zine making too.

Anyway...do you NEED an ipad.  NO.  Especially if you know photoshop and all those other great computer programs.  For me, they always mystify me and leave me feeling more stupid than I did before.    These apps are fun and super user friendly.  btw...we bought the cheaper wi-fi version.  I won't be using it while I am out and about, so no need for 3g.  something to think about since you would have to sign up for 3g service (an extra expense).

By the way...I've been digging MyNetDiary for keeping track of weight, diet and exercise  and I use Numbers for keeping track of my budget (which was being done on paper before).  That's it.  I'm not into games or watching tv or movies on it.  But it will be well used.

  1. Happy anniversary you guys!! I think buying gizmos for one another is sweet! One year my husband and I bought one another handheld game systems. (When they were the "new" thing, way back when.)

We're celebrating our 20th in the fall. No idea what we'll give one another...maybe we'll be adding Whale watching excursion to our trip or something.

Thanks for reviewing the iPad, I wondered about it. I have an Itouch iPod which is 2 yrs. old and I think that's enough gizmo for me for now, but it looks cool.

  4. Timely post. My husband and I did the exact same thing today. Went in for iPhone cable and ended up getting the wifi iPad. I have been saying I didn't want or need one for weeks. All it took was for me to see the Art Authority app and I was hooked. Thanks for the list of other apps to check out!

  5. Ironic, my hubby got one the day they came out and said if he liked it he would get me one. We just ordered mine this morning, can't wait for it to come. Thanks so much for the recommendations, will be adding those right off the bat. I haven't even tried to do Photoshop etc., I have difficulties with those things. However iphone apps are so user friendly, should have no problem figuring out the ipad. Happy Anniversary to you guys, we celebrate our 31st in July. We've been together since 8th grade, over 39 yrs...whew!

I love my iPod touch (read mini-iPad) but how do you get your finished iPad artwork out into the physical world? I love emailing pictures and posting them online but I haven't really figured out whether I can make something I can hold in my hand...

  14. Thanks Jamie for the Art Authority tip. THAT IS COOL! I have the Klimt HD and already have used it for inspiration while journaling. Had no idea this type of app existed.

and to Joanna...You just plug your ipad into your computer and all the pictures you have done are transferred. It's super easy. and vice versa...you can put photos on the ipad from your computer.

I'm tellin ya...they've made something cool here...

Question...How did you use the apps in the iPad on your art? Did you load it from your computer?

  19. Happy Anniversary. I love to celelbrate a happy marriage. :) Do you sell the stamps you make anywhere? I wanted to buy some of your sheets but I don't know how to use photoshop yet and it seemed they were not available as a jpg. Yes, I will eventually get and learn photoshop. :) In the meantime...
